Logan Lake Community Forest
The District of Logan Lake has a long and intertwined history of managing their Community Forest (CFA K2E) and managing the threat of wildfire through FireSmart activities. It was the 2003 Fire Safe Community initiative that prompted the District of Logan Lake to seek a Community Forest License, largely due to the extensive impacts of mountain pine beetle creating vast tracts of dead pine. The extreme risk of wildfire prompted them to take action to protect themselves.
Forsite was retained in 2014 to update the Logan Lake Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) and continues to spearhead all of the FireSmart activities funded through the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative (SWPI) program. On an annual basis, this represents roughly $250,000 within a 2km radius of the community and includes activities such as strategic planning, spacing, pruning, piling and burning.
The Logan Lake Community Forest (LLCF) is run by a corporation that is governed by a board of directors. The Community Forest is approximately 16,772 hectares with an allowable annual cut (AAC) of 24,000 m3. Starting in 2015, Forsite became the Manager of the LLCF, reporting directly to the Board of Directors. This relationship has flourished with many strategic initiatives identified and several targets achieved.
